Bruno Fernandes is adamant he will be at Manchester United next season… providing the club still want him.

It was thought that the United captain was one of the few stars that the club wouldn’t consider selling, given his role as skipper and status as the team’s best player of the past few years.

But recent reports claim that minority owners INEOS would be willing to sell the attacking midfielder for the right price as they kick-off their rebuild, with Fernandes not ruling out the possibility of a transfer last month.

Bayern Munich and Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr have been linked with signing the Portugal international.

But speaking after Wednesday night’s 3-2 win against Newcastle, Fernandes defiantly sent a message to his employers.

The 29-year-old said on Sky Sports: ‘I will be here until… I said the club needs to want me.

‘I feel that is the case, the club wants me to be a part of the future. As I’ve always said, I don’t want to be a player that the club doesn’t want to have.

‘If for some reason the club doesn’t want to have me I will go but if they want me I will stay.’

Against Newcastle, Fernandes showed why he is so highly valued, putting in a Player of the Match performance that culminated with assisting Rasmus Hojlund for United’s third goal.

It’s a result that keeps the Red Devils in the hunt for European football going into the final day of the season on Sunday.

‘Obviously the job isn’t finished yet. We still have one game in the Premier League then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final,’ Fernandes added.

‘It has been a tough season. The table shows that and we are all aware of that. The fans have been amazing and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have been doing for us.

‘We want to do better and do differently and they [fans] deserve that. They have been amazing for us and we had to do something, we have been trying but results don’t show that.

‘We have been working hard and everyone has been giving their best it is not enough and we have to do more.

‘It doesn’t exist, a captain’s performance, it is a team performance. I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband.

‘I always try my best and we always do the best we can for the club – nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to lift our standards every game.’
