Romário is back: He’s player-chairman and a big fan of a revitalized Brazilian soccer club

MESQUITA, Brazil (AP) — América was a once-great soccer club in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro. But it was recently on the verge of folding due to years of mismanagement. Then its most famous fan and 1994 World Cup winner Romário decided to come back from retirement at the age of 58. He brought sponsors, rebuilt part of the club’s decrepit stadium, removed the weeds from the pitch, signed new players and came up with a plan to make it as mighty as it once was.

China targets Europe’s farmers, and not its automakers, in response to EU tariffs on electric cars

BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese government is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles.

The Commerce Ministry didn’t mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dumping investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars. It also gives China a bargaining chip in any trade negotiations.

China could have slapped a 25% duty on imports of gasoline-powered vehicles with large engines in the name of combating climate change, a step that would would have hit Mercedes and BMW hard. In choosing not to do so, at least for now, the government may be acknowledging the public opposition of the German auto industry to the EU tariffs, as well as its sizeable production in China.

The Chinese market is a major one for German automakers, and the head of the country’s auto association, the VDA, described the June 12 EU tariff announcement as a further step away from global cooperation. “The risk of a global trade conflict is rising further as a result of this measure,” Hildegard Müller said in a statement.

The investigation of EU pork imports will cover various products including fresh and frozen pork meat, intestines and other internal organs. The announcement says it is expected to take one year, with a possible six-month extension.

Olof Gill, a spokesperson on trade for the European Commission, told journalists in Brussels that EU farm subsidies “are strictly in line with our WTO obligations” and that the commission would follow the investigation very closely and intervene as needed to ensure that the Chinese probe complies with World Trade Organization rules.

Chinese officials have said the EU investigation into subsidies for electric vehicle production in China is “typical protectionist behavior” that disregards WTO rules. The EU plans to impose provisional tariffs of 17.4% to 38.1% on EVs from China for four months starting July 4. They would apply to vehicles exported to Europe by both Chinese and foreign brands, including Tesla.

Georgia father freed from prison 10 years after his toddler died in hot car, leading to murder case

MACON, Ga. (AP) — A father from Georgia has been released from prison 10 years after his toddler died in a hot car, a case that made global headlines after prosecutors accused him of murder.

Justin Ross Harris was freed on Sunday — Father’s Day — from the Macon State Prison, Georgia Department of Corrections records show. He began serving his sentence on Dec. 6, 2016.

Harris had moved from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the Atlanta area for work in 2012. He told police that on the morning of June 18, 2014, he forgot to drop off his 22-month-old son Cooper at day care. Instead, he drove straight to his job as a web developer for The Home Depot and left the child in his car seat, he told investigators.

Cooper died after sitting for about seven hours in the back seat of the Hyundai Tucson SUV outside his father’s office in suburban Atlanta, where temperatures that day reached at least into the high 80s.

At trial, prosecutors put forth a theory that Harris was miserable in his marriage and killed his son so he could be free. They presented evidence of his extramarital sexual activities, including exchanging sexually explicit messages and graphic photos with women and girls and meeting some of them for sex.

Harris was found guilty in November 2016 on eight counts including malice murder. A judge sentenced him to life without parole, as well as 32 more years in prison for other crimes.

But the Georgia Supreme Court voted 6-3 to overturn his murder and child cruelty convictions in June 2022, saying the jury saw evidence that was “extremely and unfairly prejudicial.”

Prosecutors said at the time that he would not face another trial over Cooper’s death. The Cobb County district attorney’s office, which prosecuted the case, said in a statement that it disagreed with the majority’s decision. But because of that ruling, prosecutors said crucial evidence about Harris’ motive was no longer available for them to use.

Harris’ lawyers have always maintained that he was a loving father and that the boy’s death was a tragic accident.

Though it dismissed the murder conviction, the state Supreme Court upheld Harris’ convictions on three sex crimes committed against a 16-year-old girl that Harris had not appealed. He continued serving time on those crimes until Sunday, when he was released from prison.

Harris’ case drew an extraordinary amount of attention, making headlines around the world and sparking debates online and on cable news shows. After determining that pretrial publicity had made it too hard to find a fair jury in Cobb County in suburban Atlanta, the presiding judge agreed to relocate the trial to Brunswick on the Georgia coast.

Kassidy Cook, Sarah Bacon secure Olympic diving spots by winning synchro event at US trials

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — In a reversal of the last U.S. Olympic diving trials, Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon secured their spots for Paris with a victory in the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard on Monday.

Cook and Bacon became the first divers on the American team, totaling 629.82 points with two rounds of dives on the opening day of trials at the University of Tennessee aquatic center.

Bacon qualified for her first Olympic team after just missing a spot on the 2020 team. Cook, a 2016 Olympian, became the first American female diver to make non-consecutive Olympic teams.

Cook and Bacon finished second to Alison Gibson and Krysta Palmer in the synchro event at the 2020 trials, with Bacon also finishing third individually on the springboard.

This time, it was Gibson and Palmer settling for the runner-up spot with 599.49 points.

The winning duo, who are both from Minneapolis, Minnesota, closed out the finals with 70.20 points on their last dive, a front 2 1/2 somersaults with one twist. When they hit the water, they knew they had clinched a spot on the team.

“It was that moment when all your hard work comes to fruition,” Cook said. “Sometimes that doesn’t always happen. You don’t always get the result you want, and that’s happened to us before.”

Bacon was favored to make the last Olympic team, but came up short in both of her events. That motivated her to keep competing.

“It just lit a fire underneath me,” she said. “Honestly, I was planning on retiring after that Olympics, so it kept me diving. I wanted to make an Olympic team.”

Bacon, Gibson and Palmer will also be among those vying for two individual women’s 3-meter spots on the Olympic team. Palmer won a bronze in that event at the Tokyo Olympics, one of three medals claimed by the U.S. team.

The trials continue through Sunday.

Before then, the two had been estranged for decades, with Stevie not even knowing of grandson Jamie’s (Jack Ryder) death in 2002.

Tensions between Stevie and the other Mitchells, however, are set to intensify in scenes yet to air in the BBC soap.

However, he ultimately loses his temper when Will refuses.

In a moment of madness, Will knocks Stevie over and rushes off, leaving his granddad motionless on the floor.

After seeing Will bolting out of the flat, Phil enters, discovers Stevie unconscious and calls an ambulance for him.

As the Mitchells rush to hospital, however, Phil confronts Will about what happened.

Will confesses everything, leaving Phil to go and find Kyle, the boy blackmailing Will.

Back at the hospital, doctors tell the relieved Mitchells that Stevie has a concussion but will be otherwise be okay.

Later, three new faces arrive in Albert Square looking for Stevie – Teddy, Harry and Barney Mitchell.

The forthcoming entrance of the trio – who are Stevie’s son and grandsons – was first announced earlier this month as the new Mitchells make their way to Albert Square.

After her pregnancy reveal in Emmerdale, Belle takes matters into her own hands with drastic action and is left fleeing for safety.

Belle will confide in Rachel who is her Mental Health Care Coordinator, where says how she told her husband that she had a miscarriage.

However, she hides a secret as she instead had an abortion after his abuse behind close doors started to take its toll.

However, Belle is scared that Rachel might be realising the full extent of Tom’s coercive control over her as she is desperate for her to leave.

As Rachel takes a reassuring tone with her, the reality of the manipulation, bullying and control finally sinks in.

Belle cautiously nods along as the mental health expert encourages her to take a break from her abusive husband.

She stares out of the window of a taxi, feeling very conflicted over whether she can leave the toxicity behind for good.

But things soon take a dramatic turn as Noah (Jack Downham) tells Tom that Belle was in the village for an appointment, rather than taking Piper for a walk.

He is left enraged when he figures out that Belle took a trip to the abortion lyric and has been lying to him.

Tom is unable to control his growing infuriation, so he grabs an old and rusty iron bar and destroys everything in his path.

The bully eventually runs out of strength and goes for one final swing.

But he is electrocuted after he swings his arm back and the the metal bar hits the barn’s rotary isolator.

He will be left lying unconscious after he is flung violently against a beam.

At the same time, Belle gets ready to depart the village as she packs her bags into a taxi, as she seeks solace in Scotland with Debbie.

Is it illegal to store a caravan without planning permission?

YOU may head to a caravan for your summer holiday or you might live in one all year round.

It’s important to know the rules whether you can store a caravan without planning permission or if you’re going to receive a fine. Here’s what we know.

You may need planning permission to park your caravan[/caption]

Is it illegal to store a caravan without planning permission?

If your caravan is on agricultural land then you can store it for 28 days without permission.

You can also store the caravan on your own land without permission.

If the location of the caravan is considered not to be within the residential curtilage of the dwelling then it will require planning permission.

You will need to make sure that the caravan in question meets the legal definition of a mobile home in the Caravan Act.

This means that the structure must be physically capable of being moved from one place to another by road and that the twin unit must be no more than 20metres long, 6.8metres wide and the living accommodation no more than 3.096metres high.

It is best to check with your local planning authority to determine the specific laws and regulations in your area.

You could be subject to additional restrictions if you live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or conservation area.

However, if your caravan is mobile, you can generally park it on your property, just as long as it isn’t causing any obstruction and you have parked responsibly.

Some UK residences may contain clauses in their deeds prohibiting caravans from being parked in the garden or on the driveway.

This means it is a good idea to check your property deed before assuming you can park in either.

The GoCompare website explains: “You and your family are free to use your caravan as an extension of your home, for example as an extra bedroom or office, without applying for planning permission.

“If the caravan is effectively a separate home, like you’re renting it out to someone else, then you might need to apply for planning permission to do this legally.”

How much can you be fined for storing a caravan without planning permission?

To find out how much you will be fined for not getting planning permission for your caravan, you will need to contact your local authority.

However, there are several other things you may be fined for when it comes to having a caravan – static or mobile.

You need to comply with laws when it comes to:

  • Caravan ownership, insurance, and maintenance
  • Towing
  • Parking and storage

If you do not follow safety measures you can get a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban, and three penalty points.
