Huge Hollywood star reveals the reason they moved back to Scotland & bought £2m mansion

HOLLYWOOD star Ewan McGregor has said he felt a ’tug’ to return to Scotland.

The 52-year-old, best known for playing junkie Renton in Trainspotting and Obi-Wan Kenobi, said Perthshire – where he was born in 1971 – had been ‘calling’ to him since he turned 50.

The huge Hollywood star bought a £2million mansion in Perthshire

The star moved to London when he was 17, and then to LA in 2008 – even becoming a US citizen in 2016.

He has homes in LA and London and moved between the two, but recently snapped up a £2million eco-home in Perthshire.

Speaking about moving back to Scotland, he said he chatted to fellow Scot – funnyman Craig Ferguson, 61, who was born in Glasgow – who said he also felt it.

Former Late Show host Ferguson bought a 15-bed mansion in Ayrshire in 2012, when he had just turned 50.

Speaking today, Ewan said: “I’ve lived in Scotland for less time than I’ve lived away from it, but I’ve never lost my love for it.

“I have a home there now.”

He said Craig said to him ‘How old are you, Ewan?’, and I said 52, and he said ‘Aye, that’s it. You get to your fifties and it’s time to go home’.

Ewan told the Culture supplement in The Sunday Times today: “I do really feel this tug.”

It comes as we previously revealed that Ewan is reportedly at war with the council amid a battle over his Scots mansion.

He returned to live in Scotland in January after splashing out on the 18th-century country retreat.

The actor purchased an 18th-century country retreat in Perthshire with more than 18 acres of land and gardens.

However the superhome has been under the microscope by local authority chiefs, according to The Courier.

It’s understood documents reveal a probe has been launched into alterations to McGregor’s master bedroom and bathroom suite.

The changes have apparently been undertaken without planning permission.

Star hits back at ‘forgotten Scottish roots’ claim

EWAN McGregor has blasted fans after claiming that many accuse him of forgetting his Scottish roots.

The Scots Hollywood star, 52, said “I don’t need anybody to remind me” as he opened up about leaving Scotland when he was 17 years old.

The Star Wars legend moved to London from his hometown of Crieff, in Perthshire, for drama school and then decided to pack his bags and head to the US in 2008.

And he said the decision to do so has led fans to feel like he has, at times, forgotten his roots.

Speaking to Radio Times, the film star said: “I left Scotland at 17 to go to drama school in London.

“I haven’t lived in Britain since 2008, I’ve been living in the States.

“It was hard to leave. There’s a sense you’re turning your back.

“People in Scotland to this day tell me to remember where I come from. I know where I come from!

“I don’t need anybody to remind me. It’s this feeling of ‘you’re not Scottish enough.’

“I’m Scottish wherever I am in the world. I’m always Scottish!”

On January 23, a council letter said: “It has been brought to our attention that internal works have recently been undertaken at your property.

“It should be noted that your property is a Category C Listed Building.

“As such, listed building consent may be required for any works internal or external to the property.

“A search of our records has established that no such consent has been sought or approved.”
