Local brewery offers lessons on South Dakota plant life

JEFFERSON, S.D. (KCAU) — Some Siouxlanders spent their Sunday afternoons having a cold one and learning a thing or two about South Dakota’s native plants and pollinators.

Ahead of the upcoming monarch migration, Loess Hills Wild Ones and Pheasants Forever held an open discussion at Jefferson Beer Supply.

While enjoying local brews, attendees created seed balls made from native seeds.

Local nature experts also shared ways people could incorporate local vegetation into their own gardens.

“It’s important for us to realize how special native plants are to this area and for our pollinators, bees, and everything else,” Annabel Dirksen with Jefferson Beer Supply said. “It just keeps the ecosystem going and it’s a way to keep our land, and area, and nature healthy.”

Dirksen said that they’re already thinking about next year’s Points, Pollinators, and Plants event.

“I think that we’re always wanting to innovate,” Dirksen said. “We like to learn from what we’ve done in the past, so I’m sure something like this will happen again next year, but we’ll have to put a different spin on it. Make it exciting and fun, and maybe learn from this event to add things in the future.”

Dirsken said she hopes to bring in more organizations for next year’s event and, weather permitting, take it outside.
